867. THE FIRST NOEL


THE first Noel the angel did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay, keeping their sheep,
In a cold winter’s night that was so deep:

Noel, noel, noel, noel,
Born is the king of Israel!

Then wise men, guided by a star,
Came from the eastern countries far;
To seek for a King was their intent,
And to fellow the star wheresoever it went:

This star drew nigh to the north-west;
O’er Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay
Right over the place where Jesus lay:
